When I first moved into my house and started exploring my new neighborhood, I found a small family of bison living in a large field nearby. Of course, I was enthralled and started going to visit as often as was possible, always trying to get some good photos. They were usually too far away from the fence to get a decent picture, but I would stop and watch them for a while anyway. I eventually gave the huge male a name, Gus. It took three years to catch Gus close enough to the fence to get some good photos. I’m so glad I persisted because one day not long after my photo shoot with Gus, they were gone. All of them. It’s been another three years since they disappeared and I still drive by occasionally, hoping a new family will appear. I’m so grateful to be able to call this place home, where bison, coyotes, and roadrunners are my neighbors.
